I first tried Luna & Larry's Coconut Bliss at my in-laws' house last summer. I thought it was okay, but secretly felt a little food snobby about it; I figured it was fine for someone on a restricted diet, but wondered why anyone with a choice would pick up a frozen dessert made with coconut milk over, say, Häagen-Dazs Dulce de Leche. Like so many of the issues that my mother-in-law brings up, damn it if she didn't have a point: This stuff is vegan, gluten-free, and soy-free, and being totally plant-based, it contains no dietary cholesterol. Unlike sorbet, Luna & Larry's Coconut Bliss is more creamy than it is icy; it even has my cat fooled—he always hangs around to lick the bowl (and because he's 13, I let him). Like lots of things I used to consume without thinking—white pasta, a third glass of wine—ice cream has recently been thrown out of my weekly repertoire in the name of health (and maintaining a healthy weight). Now when I can't stand it another second, such as during the recent stretch of triple-digit days in Fort Worth, I go up to Central Market and pony up the five bucks per pint for this awesome vegan frozen frozen dessert.
